The Jean Style of The Autumn

Because while denim never really goes out, the proportions definitely change — and for Autumn/Winter 2026, volume is still very much part of the story.

Despite all the talk about skinny jeans returning, the season isn’t simply about swapping our wide legs for skinnies. Vogue’s 2026 denim coverage describes a much broader denim wardrobe, ranging from straight and cigarette cuts to some of the widest wide-leg jeans we’ve seen. For Autumn/Winter specifically, Vogue highlights oversized wide legs as one of the key runway denim styles. (Vogue⁠)

For me, there are three particularly wearable jean directions to know this autumn: barrel, wide leg and the 70s-inspired front-pocket jean.

And they’re all surprisingly easy to wear.

1. The Barrel Jean

If you invested in barrel jeans last year, excellent news: they’re going nowhere.

In fact, they appear to be moving in the opposite direction — from fashion trend to mainstream jean shape.

In Vogue Business’s Autumn/Winter 2026 trend predictions, trend forecasters described barrel silhouettes as “particularly prevalent”, noting that the shape has moved from feeling highly directional to having much broader commercial appeal. The figures back that up too: 35% of barrel-leg trousers and jeans sold out during AW25. (Vogue⁠)

And barrel jeans were still appearing on the AW26 catwalks. At 6397, for example, baggy barrel-leg denim was styled as part of the label’s relaxed take on everyday dressing. (Vogue⁠)

The difference for this autumn is that I think the most wearable versions are becoming less extreme.

Think:

Mid or high rise
Room through the thigh
A gentle curved leg
A subtle taper towards the ankle

Rather than an enormous horseshoe shape.

How to style barrel jeans

The trick is to let the jeans provide the volume.

Try them with a simple white tee and blazer now, then replace the tee with a fine knit as the weather cools.

They also look brilliant with:

A feminine blouse + ballet flats
A fitted cardigan + loafers
A simple knit + suede ankle boots
A white shirt + military jacket

And don’t automatically reach for chunky trainers. A loafer, ballet flat or pointed boot makes a barrel jean feel instantly more polished.

2. The Wide Leg — Still the Big One

If you’re wondering whether wide-leg jeans are over, the answer is a very definite no.

Vogue’s brand-new Fall 2026 denim report describes voluminous wide-leg jeans as a continuing autumn favourite — but says the 2026 version is noticeably more polished, with higher rises and trouser-inspired cuts replacing some of the very low-slung, baggy shapes we’ve seen previously. Givenchy and Gabriela Hearst were among the designers showing the silhouette. (Vogue⁠)

And this isn’t just a catwalk micro-trend.

For Pre-Fall 2026, Vogue singled out wide-fit jeans in aged washes at Chanel, Dior, Nili Lotan and Chloé as one of the key ways denim was being elevated for the new season. (Vogue⁠)

So don’t retire your wide legs.

Instead, think about making them look smarter.

Look for a beautiful drape, a proper waistband and a leg that falls almost like a pair of tailored trousers.

And importantly: wear them long.

How to style wide-leg jeans

Because you’ve got volume on the bottom, I love adding some definition on top.

Try:

Wide-leg jeans + tucked white tee + leather belt + blazer

Or:

Wide-leg jeans + feminine blouse + pointed boot

And once it gets colder:

Wide-leg jeans + neat knit + long wool coat + loafers

One of my favourite combinations for Autumn 2026 is a dark or true-blue wide leg with chocolate brown suede or leather.

Simple, but incredibly chic.

3. The Front-Pocket Jean

And this is the one I’m particularly interested in.

You’ve probably started noticing jeans with large patch or flap pockets on the front, often combined with a wide or gently flared leg.

They have that fabulous 70s trouser-jean feel and are a really easy way to make jeans feel new without having to embrace a radically different silhouette.

I wouldn’t say that front pockets are the defining denim trend of AW26 in the same way that wide-leg proportions are — but they fit perfectly into the season’s move towards tailored, detailed denim.

That’s exactly the mood.

A little bit retro, a little bit polished and much more interesting than a completely plain pair of jeans.

How to wear front-pocket jeans

This is where I’d keep everything else incredibly simple.

White shirt + front-pocket jeans + brown belt + loafers

Or:

Fine knit + front-pocket jeans + suede ankle boots

Or my favourite:

Feminine blouse + dark denim + pointed shoe + great bag

The pockets provide enough detail that you really don’t need to do much else.

One thing to watch: pocket placement.

Large pockets positioned towards the outside of the hip can visually add width, whereas pockets sitting slightly more centrally tend to draw the eye inward.

So this is definitely a pair I’d try on rather than buying purely because you love them on someone else.

What Wash Should We Be Buying?

There’s no single compulsory wash for AW26.

Vogue’s Fall 2026 runway report highlights true blue as an important denim colour alongside light washes, earth tones and brighter coloured denim. (Vogue⁠)

But for an everyday autumn wardrobe, I particularly love:

Dark indigo
True blue
Vintage mid-blue
Clean dark denim without distressing

They work beautifully with all the colours we’re going to want to wear this autumn — chocolate, camel, khaki, cream and burgundy.

So What About Skinny Jeans?

Yes. They’re creeping back.

Vogue includes both skinny and cigarette silhouettes within its 2026 denim trends, and the cigarette jean is specifically highlighted again for Autumn/Winter. (Vogue⁠)

But that doesn’t mean you need to abandon your wide legs and barrels.

In fact, that’s probably the most important takeaway from the AW26 shows.

This isn’t a season where one jean shape has replaced another.

Instead, we’re seeing a denim wardrobe made up of different proportions — slim, straight, barrel, wide and flared — styled in a much more considered way.

If You’re Buying Just One Pair…

If you already own barrel jeans, I’d buy a beautiful full-length wide leg.

If your wardrobe is full of wide legs, try a soft barrel.

And if you have both?

I’d look for a wide-leg or gently flared pair with fabulous front pockets.

It’s a tiny detail, but it’s exactly the sort of detail that makes jeans and a jumper suddenly feel like an outfit again.

And that, for me, is exactly what a good fashion trend should do.
