The Footwear Trends To Know This Autumn

If last autumn was dominated by the loafer and ballet flat, Autumn 2026 feels noticeably more grown-up and directional. Shoes are becoming a focal point again: sharper toes, elegant heels, dramatic boots and richer textures.

The good news? A lot of it is surprisingly wearable. Vogue’s Fall 2026 footwear report highlights kitten heels, T-straps, slippers and pointed pumps, while the runways also showed a major return to statement boots.

The 6 footwear trends I’d actually wear

1. The pointed shoe

Perhaps the easiest update of the season. Pointed toes are appearing on pumps, slingbacks, boots and flats, instantly making jeans and simple trousers look more polished. Vogue highlights the pointed pump as one of Fall 2026’s important shapes, including versions at Stella McCartney, Chanel and Tory Burch.

For everyday wear, I love a low pointed slingback or kitten heel with wide-leg or barrel jeans. It gives all that denim volume a much more feminine finish.

2. Knee-high — and thigh-high — boots

Boots are properly back. And rather than the chunky stomper styles we’ve seen in recent years, AW26 boots are becoming sleeker, longer and more elegant.

Thigh-high boots were particularly noticeable across Paris, appearing at Stella McCartney, Hermès, Alexander McQueen, Chloé, Balenciaga and Givenchy.

You absolutely don’t need to go full thigh-high, though. A beautiful chocolate, black or burgundy knee-high boot worn under a midi dress or skirt gives the same feeling.

3. The high-vamp shoe

This is one to watch because I think it could become the fashion-insider shoe of autumn.

Imagine a cross between a loafer, pump and slipper, coming higher over the top of your foot. Who What Wear spotted the shape repeatedly at Tory Burch, Calvin Klein, Proenza Schouler, Khaite and Michael Kors.

It looks particularly chic with cropped or ankle-length trousers.

4. T-bars & Mary Janes

The pretty shoe isn’t disappearing — it’s evolving.

Rather than the very delicate ballet flats of previous seasons, look for T-bar straps, Mary Janes, satin finishes and small heels. Vogue identifies the T-strap as one of Fall 2026’s key runway shapes.

Try them with straight jeans, a cardigan and blazer rather than styling them too sweetly.

5. Animal print

If your wardrobe is predominantly navy, cream, chocolate, khaki and denim, this is probably the trend worth adding.

Leopard, zebra and snakeskin footwear appeared across the AW26 collections, including at Jil Sander, Khaite and Saint Laurent.

Think of an animal-print shoe almost as a neutral: jeans + white blouse + leopard flat = instantly more interesting.

6. Suede, satin & rich texture

Autumn 2026 footwear isn’t only about shape — texture matters.

Who What Wear picked out satin as one of the significant runway footwear stories, alongside two-tone shoes, jewel embellishment and animal print.

For everyday wardrobes, I’d translate that into chocolate suede boots, burgundy suede Mary Janes, tactile loafers and beautifully soft leather rather than anything too embellished.

And what about trainers?

They’re not disappearing, but I think the mood is changing. Rather than trainers being the automatic shoe with every outfit, proper shoes are coming back.

Brogues, derbies and lace-ups have also been gathering momentum, with Vogue noting versions from Jil Sander, Loewe, Celine and Dior.

Keep your retro trainers for wide-leg jeans and relaxed trousers, but swap them for a pointed flat, loafer or low heel when you want an outfit to feel newer.

The TLM Edit verdict

If you’re only buying three pairs for Autumn 2026, I’d make them:

  1. Chocolate or dark brown knee-high boots
  2. A pointed flat/slingback or kitten heel in burgundy, brown or animal print
  3. A polished loafer, T-bar or Mary Jane

Those three will update everything you already own — particularly barrel jeans, wide-leg denim, midi skirts and autumn dresses — without making your wardrobe feel overly trend-led.

And that, for me, is the best kind of trend: something that makes the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe suddenly feel new again.
