The Colours of Autumn 2026: What We’ll All Be Wearing This Season

Every autumn seems to have a colour.

A couple of years ago it was burgundy. Last autumn, chocolate brown was suddenly everywhere — coats, suede bags, knitwear, boots and accessories.

So what is the colour of Autumn 2026?

If the catwalks and fashion forecasters are anything to go by, there’s a clear contender:

Aubergine is the new chocolate brown

Purple is having a major fashion moment for Autumn/Winter 2026 — but forget sugary lilac. This season it’s the deeper, richer end of the spectrum: aubergine, plum, violet and royal purple.

Who What Wear has gone as far as describing purple as Fall 2026’s “#1 color trend”, after seeing variations of the shade across collections including Celine, Ferragamo, Loewe and Tory Burch. (Who What Wear)

It was particularly noticeable at London Fashion Week. Who What Wear reported that if there was one colour that defined the AW26 London shows, it was royal purple, ranging from deep aubergine through to vivid violet. (Who What Wear)

For everyday wardrobes, I think aubergine is the one to watch.

It has the same appeal that made burgundy and chocolate brown so wearable: it feels expensive, works beautifully with denim and neutrals and adds colour without feeling overly bright.

Think an aubergine jumper with dark denim, a plum blouse with chocolate trousers or a deep purple bag worn with khaki.

Olive & Moss Green

The second colour I’m expecting to see everywhere is olive green.

This one has some serious backing. Pantone’s official Fashion Color Trend Report for New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2026/27 includes Burnt Olive, which it describes as a richly layered green with subtle sophistication. (Pantone)

It makes perfect sense for autumn.

Olive works almost as a neutral and looks particularly good alongside chocolate brown, cream, navy and denim.

If you don’t normally consider yourself someone who “wears green”, an olive jacket, knit or pair of trousers is one of the easiest ways to introduce it.

Chocolate Brown Isn’t Going Anywhere

If you invested in chocolate brown last year, don’t panic.

Chocolate is staying.

The difference is that rather than being the statement colour, brown is settling into our wardrobes as a modern neutral — much like navy, camel or black.

So keep the chocolate suede bag. Keep the brown boots. Keep the chocolate knit.

In fact, they’re going to look even better mixed with this season’s aubergine and olive.

Navy & Ink Blue

Another colour quietly becoming much more important is deep navy and ink blue.

After seasons dominated by warm browns, blue feels fresh again.

The Pantone AW26/27 New York palette includes All Aboard, a vibrant maritime blue, while strong blues have also appeared repeatedly across the Fall 2026 collections. (Pantone)

For those of us who don’t want to dress like a walking fashion trend, navy is probably the easiest update of all.

Try navy knitwear with chocolate accessories, dark denim with aubergine or a navy coat over olive.

And Then There’s Pink…

Autumn doesn’t have to mean sensible earthy colours.

One of the interesting things about the AW26 collections is the contrast between traditional autumnal shades and much more expressive colour.

Pantone describes the season as a balance between restrained opulence and modernity, with earthy colours and neutrals sitting alongside much more daring shades. (Pantone)

That makes fuchsia and punchy pink brilliant accent colours.

Rather than necessarily wearing head-to-toe pink, I’m thinking a bright pink knit with chocolate trousers, a pink blouse under a navy jacket or simply a pop of pink in an accessory.

So, What Is The Colour of Autumn 2026?

If I had to call it now:

2024: Burgundy
2025: Chocolate Brown
2026: Aubergine

But the bigger story is the colour combination.

Aubergine + Olive + Chocolate + Navy, with flashes of brighter pink, feels very Autumn 2026.

And it’s surprisingly wearable.

Perhaps that’s what I like most about this season’s colours. You don’t need to replace your wardrobe. Chocolate pieces from last year work with aubergine. Navy works with olive. Denim works with absolutely everything.

It’s more about adding one new-season colour and making the clothes you already own feel current again.
